Hi There!  Check out this long list of free online classes.  There is a series of drawing classes which are the perfect compliment to the series I’ve been posting about drawing your own scrapbook paper.  Classes in color theory, design, digital scrapbooking, and drawing are being offered in the next few weeks at CreativeLive.  They are all available to watch for free during their air time, or you can purchase them to watch at your convenience.  Here’s the list.

Here are some free classes offered at CreativeLive in the next few weeks.

1. Color Fundamentals

Friday Jun 30th – Saturday Jul 1st 9:00am – 9:00am PDT
This class will give you an overview of color principles and demonstrate how to apply them. Instructor Mary Jane Begin is an award-winning illustrator and author of children’s picture books, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate and professor in the Illustration Department.

In this class she covers:

  • The elements of color, including value, temperature, saturation, hierarchy, complements, light, harmony, and contrast
  • The use of color complements in image making
  • The relationship of color to the medium and expression

Through a series of demonstrations, you’ll learn how to work with color and ultimately make better color decisions. This class covers foundations that applies to all image making, in design, art, illustration, photography, and beyond.

2. Designing Wedding Invitations and more

Saturday Jul 1st – Sunday Jul 2nd 9:00am – 9:00am PDT

Wedding collateral is typically designed with a one-size-fits-all approach, but everything from the save-the-date to the program to the menu should reflect your story. This class will show you how to create a customized and cohesive design to your wedding, so your story is truly reflected in all the details of your wedding items.
This course will show you basic design principles, key aspects to consider when creating wedding collateral, and how to approach this project in a systematic way so the final results are both heartwarming and stunning.

3. Digital Scrapbooking for Beginners

Tired of having a closet full of scrapbooking supplies? Ready to save your images in a more secure, permanent way? Join Michelle Stelling for an introduction to digital scrapbooking.

In this course, you’ll learn how to use Photoshop Elements 12 to edit images and create simple templates, digi-kits, and retouch old photos. Michelle will cover feathering, clone stamping, adding text, and other tips and tricks for presenting your images. You’ll learn how to troubleshoot common image issues using red eye reduction, spot healing techniques and more. You’ll also learn about working with brushes and textures to create your own papers and backgrounds.

4. Drawing Basics 1: Making Your Mark

Wednesday Jul 12th 9:00am – 10:30am PDT

This beginner-friendly class will teach you essential techniques for drawing realistically. Understand the concepts of line quality, contour line, and mark making. You’ll also learn about the materials used in drawing and art so you’re not intimidated by the art store. And you’ll understand how to slow down and ‘see’ things to better draw them. Instructor Amy Wynne teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and exhibits her work nationally, winning numerous grants and awards.

In this class you’ll learn:

  • The expressive potential of a variety of drawing media on varied surfaces
  • How to build a connection between eye, mind and hand
  • To practice sensitive line quality as it relates to mechanical versus organic motifs

By the end of the class, you’ll have created a series of contour drawings of organic and mechanical objects in varied materials.

5. Drawing Basics 2: Cross Contour Lines & Ellipses

Wednesday Jul 12th 11:00am – 12:30pm PDT

This beginner-friendly class will teach you essential techniques for drawing realistically. Understand the three dimensional form and curved objects. Instructor Amy Wynne teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and exhibits her work nationally, winning numerous grants and awards.

This class covers:

  • Turning 3D forms in space & using cross contour lines
  • Learning how to draw and measure height to width of ellipses
  • Applying knowledge of ellipses to drawing eggs, cylinders, coffee cups, & bananas

A series of practice pages will be provided to get you started. You’ll draw 3D forms such as an egg and a cube, and build up to drawing hands.

6. Drawing Basics 3: Perspective & Angle

Thursday Jul 13th 9:00am – 10:30am PDT

This beginner-friendly class will teach you essential techniques for drawing realistically. Understand perspective and how to sight angles for better accuracy. Instructor Amy Wynne teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and exhibits her work nationally, winning numerous grants and awards.

This class covers:

  • Applying knowledge of ellipses to drawing eggs, cylinders, coffee cups, & bananas
  • Learning how to sight angles and place them with accuracy
  • Measuring relationships of height to width

A series of practice pages will be provided to get you started. You’ll draw three dimensional forms from multiple angles, and learn perspective that applies to landscape drawings, buildings, and still life.

7. Drawing Basics 4: Tonality & Shadows

Thursday Jul 13th 11:00am – 12:30pm PDT

This beginner-friendly class will teach you essential techniques for drawing realistically. Learn how to create light and shadow in your drawings by applying techniques such as tonal scales, cross hatching and mark making. Instructor Amy Wynne teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and exhibits her work nationally, winning numerous grants and awards.

This class covers:

  • Tonal gradations, hatching, cross hatching
  • Creating a dramatic value range
  • Working with core and cast shadow

A bit about CreativeLive

You can watch classes for free at CreativeLive in 2 ways:

  1. Watch the Live Broadcast – look at their schedule of live classes and watch it when it airs. You can find their current schedule of live classes here, then selecting Live. Also, in the list of all classes the live classes are denoted by a small Live in the top left corner. One of the great things about the live broadcast schedule is that you can click an RSVP button and you’ll be sent an email reminder. I just love their reminder service!
  2. Watch the Rebroadcast – look at their rebroadcast schedule to find out when you can watch a class you missed or want to see again is on the air for free. You can find their current schedule of rebroadcast classes here. Good news – Creative Live has added an RSVP option for the rebroadcast classes! If you have an account you can RSVP for the class and they will send you a reminder. How great is that!

Remember to click the “on air” button in the top menu to see a list of the classes you can watch for free. Then just click on the class you want to watch. The classes change at about 9 am pacific time, so visit CreativeLive then to get access to that day’s free broadcasts.

If you find a class you like, you can purchase it just prior or during a broadcast (live or rebroadcast) at a discount. You can then download the class and watch it any time you like. Or you can sign on to your account and stream it anytime.
