Happy 2018! It’s so much fun to take out my new MAMBI planner and decorate it for 2018. I decided to use some scrapbook paper and embellishments in my planner this month, so I’ll share that process with you.
Using Scrapbook Paper and Embellishments
There are a lot of great planner supplies on the market, but sometimes its fun to use what we already have in our craft room. I have been scrapbooking for a long time, so I have a wide variety of scrapbook paper and embellishments in my craft room that would look great in my planner.
Why Scrapbook Paper and Embellishment
There are a lot of pluses to using scrapbook paper and embellishments in a planner. Here are a few.
Wide Variety of Themes
One great reason to consider using scrapbook paper and embellishments in a planner is the wide variety of themes available. Virtually any theme or color is available, so a planner can be decorated to represent your likes and interests.
Works with Any Size Planner
Scrapbook paper works with any size and style planner, because you cut it to fit. That’s a real plus to for me, because this year I have a big MAMBI planner and most of the supplies I have are designed for a classic size.
Scrapbook paper is fairly inexpensive. One sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper will decorate an entire spread with some left over. Because I scrapbook, I have lots of scrapbook paper scraps and left over embellishments. This means I can decorate my planner for free! Got to love free!
The Process of Using Scrapbook Paper and Embellishment
It’s pretty simple, but there are a few things to keep in mind when using scrapbook paper and embellishment in a planner.
Keep It Thin
First, select embellishments that aren’t too thick. Puffy stickers, cardstock stickers and washi tape are ideal, while dimensional stickers and buttons aren’t the best. Remember you’ll be writing in your planner, so thin embellishments are best.
Fussy Cut Embellishments
You can cut scrapbook paper into rectangles with a paper trimmer or cutting machine such as a silhouette, but you can also cut out shapes with scissors. By fussy cutting shapes with scissors you can create your own embellishments that match the paper perfectly. Plus I find fussy cutting to be really relaxing. Additionally, a wide variety of shapes can be cut out with a silhouette and used to embellish a planner.
My favorite adhesives for my planner are a double sided tape and quick dry glue. If you want edge to edge coverage, you can apply sheets of double sided adhesive to your scrapbook paper prior to cutting it out.
January Before The Pen Planner Spreads
Here are my before the pen spreads for January 2018.
Week 1 – Gold
I’ll be ringing in the new year with this bright gold planner spread.
Week 2 – Winter Wonderland Scrapbook Paper
Winter is in full bloom by the middle of January, so I chose to embrace winter with this fun winter themed page.
I love the fun colors and sayings of the Winter Wonderland scrapbook paper from Simple Stories. I cut the embellishments from pieces of paper and glued them in place.
Week 3 – Fun Colors to Brighten the Winter
Adding a few bright colors to my planner to give me a boost in the winter.
Love the color of these travel labels, and they aren’t just for travel. These colors are so pretty, and a bit wintry, so decided to do one week with these labels. Plus their large size work great in the big MAMBI planner.
Week 4- Disney Theme
To add a bit of whimsy to my planner, I decided to decorate a couple weeks in my planner with a Disney theme.
I had a bunch of left over scrapbook paper scraps and embellishments from my Disney Flipbook, so decided to use them in my planner. Free planner supplies – love it! The fun colors of this scrapbook paper will surly brighten my winter. In addition to using paper scraps I added some die cuts to this spread.
Week 5 – Disney Theme
I love Disney, and had a lot of scraps left, so decided to do 2 weeks in a Disney theme.
By varying the colors and motifs this week has a look all its own. For this spread I chose to focus on red, aqua and black. Most of it is paper, however I did add a few stickers and a couple of items from the die cut pack.
